The Disasters of Border Crossing

Rosa Linda Fragoso

Piedad’s father was a border crosser who died the year she turned 15. She was watching television on the morning her uncles appeared with news of his death, and much later she would be tormented by the day of his return. “My father’s corpse arrived in a cardboard package tied with plastic bands, like a large addressed mail package.” He was one of those pilgrims Eduardo Galeano writes abo

INMIGRATION TYRANY

A popular argument among advocates of immigration controls is that a nation has a “right” to control its borders. The argument is based on the supposed “right” of the U.S. government to station gendarmes along its international borders, including on privately owned land, to prevent people from coming into the country illegally.

What the advocates of control never address, however, is a related situation: If the government has the “right” to prevent people from coming

Hi Ricardo,

I had a very interesting dialogue with Mike about art and some economic development approaches I've started to explore and develop that might be of interest to you. Of special interest to me is how these opportunities can help support/sustain community programs. Is this something you'd have an interest in exploring?

Only the best,
Yvette

Gracias Chero. Interesting what is happening in the US with libertarian Ron Paul moving ahead for the canidacy of the republican party.

http://www.wired.com/politics/onlinerights/news/2007/06/ron_paul

It has been revealed that fourteen percent of republican presidential campaign donors in the second quarter, donated to Ron Paul.

He has placed first and second in many national online polls with respondents numbering into the tens of thousands. He has more money on hand than John McCain.

His grassroots campaign boasts twenty thousand members and he has over 20,000 videos dedicated to him on YouTube.Com, dwarfing all other republican candidates.

He sells out rallies wherever he attends and has won a straw poll in crucial New Hampshire."

Indeed Ricardo, de Toqueville was marveled about what he called "America". One of my favorite passages relates to your theme about civil society in this country: "what the government does in France, and the Nobles in England, Americans do through their civil organizations". Henry David Thoroeau is the representative of that rebel spirit and philosophy, that expects so much of the actions of the individuals, and values these "per se".

Great forum
